PHOTOS – THE DAILY HABIT

Johnny and I recently went to FUEL to appear on The Daily Habit, promoting MAKE IT COUNT, which airs tonight, July 23rd, at 6pm (PST) on FUEL TV.

This is the production schedule that was posted in our green-room, which ironically was black, and didn't have any Snickers for us to eat.

Element Advocate, Amber B, came along to shoot some behind-the-scenes photos, and this what she got…

PHOTO – KRIS MARKOVICH

Yesterday will go down in history, as we shot one of the most last-minute interviews of the project… While shooting a promo piece for FUEL’s Daily Habit, Johnny (Schillereff) and I ran into Kris Markovich. And through an amazing turn of events, Kris and I were eventually in a back alley shooting an interview with a borrowed camera, tripod, and mic.

Thanks Kris for the interview, FUEL for the camera, Amber B for the photo, Johnny for Element, and everybody else.

INTERVIEW – MIKE V EXPLAINS SKATEBOARDING’S ROOTS

Mike V is considerably one of the most important people within skateboarding, as he has ushered in decades of change, including fashion, innovation, and business.

Here Mike explains how his generation interpreted early magazine photos into what we know now as “street skating” along with a photo collection by Element Advocate, Amber B .

INTERVIEW – TODD FRANCIS ON NATAS

Ten years ago, Element honored the importance of Natas Kaupas to our industry by re-releasing his original SMA board with an updated illustration by Todd Francis.

Todd knows a thing or two regarding skateboard history, especially when you consider his resumé as the iconic illustrator of such brands like Anti-Hero, Element, New Deal, Real, Stereo and a lot more. So when he talks about street skating and its heroes, you better listen up.

Here are photos from Todd’s interview, shot by Element Advocate, Amber B, and an interview regarding Natas and his impact on skateboarding.

VIDEO PART – STEVIE WILLIAMS (1994)

I caught up with Stevie Williams to discuss all things Element, including the short-lived Underworld Element, meeting Johnny Schillereff & Andy Howell, LOVE Park’s early days, and skateboarding today. In doing so, Stevie explained how he first got on Element at a mere 12-years old.

Here’s Stevie’s debut video part in the 1994 video; Fine Artists, along with an introductory interview clip…

PHOTOS – EAST COAST TRIP #1

Last year, I went to the East Coast with Johnny Schillereff (Element founder) to shoot  interviews and imagery for MAKE IT COUNT. We started off in New York City, made our way through Albany, and then up to New Hampshire.

1. First we met up with Nick Hartman, one of Johnny’s childhood friends… In the late 80’s & early 90’s Nick owned a skate-shop in Albany; Concrete Beach, which sponsored Johnny and a myriad of other locals. His interview was full of insight into the small world of East Coast skateboarding at that time.

2. The next day my (still) camera died, and this was the last photo I shot on it.

3. In New Hampshire, I interviewed Johnny’s dad (and others). When it was all said and done, the correlation between Johnny’s up-bringing and the vibe of Element, was all too apparent.

4. Johnny’s dad has a collection of SPAM wine glasses, and I tested each and every one of them.

5. The lakeside sunsets were second to none, aside from what California has to offer.

6. Dear Schillereff family, thank you for your hospitality (and wine).

PHOTOS – AMY PURDY

“Amy Purdy is one of the most motivated people, ever. I first met her when she was speaking to school kids at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa, Ca. From there, I’d come to find out, that at 19yrs old, she lost both of her legs amongst a myriad of other tragedies thanks to a rare case of bacterial meningitis. Oddly enough, she was lucky enough to escape with her life, and has lived to tell the tale…

Today, nothing stops this lady; she snowboards, skates, acts, and has founded the non-profit organization, Adaptive Action Sports.

We visited Amy for a MAKE IT COUNT interview at her home in Lake Tahoe… Here are some photos from behind-the-scenes.” – Amber B

INTERVIEW – DAN WOLFE IN BLACK & WHITE

Dan Wolfe explains the little known reason why his signature Eastern Exposure videos and other edits were in black & white.
